Why is my garage door so loud?

A garage door that suddenly sounds like a freight train is the most common complaint we get after broken springs, and it is the one people live with the longest before calling. They should not: loud is the door telling you something is wearing out, and catching it early is the difference between a small visit and a bigger one.

Here is how to tell what you are actually hearing.

Rattling and grinding: the rollers

Old steel rollers with worn bearings are the single biggest source of garage door noise we find. The door shudders, the tracks rumble, and the sound carries straight into the room above the garage. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings change the sound of the whole system, and the swap is one of the quickest, cheapest upgrades we do. Squeaking and popping: the springs and hardware

A dry spring squeals. Hinges and brackets that have loosened over the years pop and tick as the door moves. This is the tune-up tier: lubrication, tightening, and a tension check, and it costs far less than people fear. The important part is that a technician checks the spring tension while they are there, because a door out of balance wears its opener fast.

Straining, humming, or shaking: the opener

If the motor sounds like it is working harder than it used to, either the door is out of balance or the opener itself is nearing the end.
