A broken spring is the call we get more than any other, and it is never at a good time. The door weighs a few hundred pounds without the springs doing the lifting, so the opener cannot move it and neither can your back. If your car is trapped inside, tell us when you call, because that changes how we schedule the morning.

Usually there is a bang from the garage that sounds like something fell, and then the door will not open, or it opens six inches and quits. If you look above the door, the torsion spring on the metal shaft has a visible gap in the coil. Extension springs run along the side tracks instead, and one of those lets go with a snap you can see in the slack cable. Either way, stop running the opener. You can lift it by hand with help, but it is heavy and it will not stay up on its own, so we do not recommend it. Running the opener with a broken spring burns out the motor. If your car is trapped, call us and we will get you out.
Standard springs are rated for about ten thousand open-close cycles, which lands at seven to twelve years for a typical family. A door you use as the front door wears them faster. Higher-cycle springs exist and we will show you the difference when it matters.
