Cables and rollers are the small parts that carry the whole door. The lift cables do the actual hoisting under spring tension, and the rollers are what a two-hundred-pound door rides on, dozens of times a week. When either starts to go, the door tells you: it gets loud, it shudders, it tracks crooked, or one day it drops a corner and jams.
The version of this call we take seriously is the door off its track. Do not force it up or down, and do not keep hitting the opener button, because a crooked door under power bends panels and bends tracks. We have re-seated plenty of doors like that, and the earlier we see it, the smaller the repair.
The detail
Fraying shows first: a cable starting to shred near the bottom bracket, a few strands at a time. Rollers go rough, so the door rattles and grinds where it used to glide. None of it gets better on its own, and a cable that snaps while the door is moving is how panels get bent. The good news is that both are quick, contained repairs when they are caught at the noisy stage, and new rollers alone take years of sound off a door.
The bottom brackets where the cables attach are under the full tension of the springs, which is the one spot on the door that can genuinely hurt you. People read the door as a simple machine and it is not. We have the winding bars and the habits for it, and the job is short enough that the risk never makes sense. We also reset the tension and the drum alignment while we are in there, which is the part a parts-swap video leaves out.

Leave it alone and keep people clear of it. Do not run the opener and do not try to push the rollers back in, because the door is unstable and the springs are still loaded. Call and we will secure it, re-seat it, and find what knocked it out in the first place.
Look where the cable wraps at the bottom corners of the door. If you see broken strands, rust, or a cable that looks fuzzy instead of smooth, it is on its way out. That is the moment to call, while it is still a small job.
Yes, noticeably. Old steel rollers with worn bearings are the single biggest source of garage door noise we find, and nylon rollers with sealed bearings change the sound of the whole house. Customers regularly tell us the quiet was the biggest surprise.
